Access and attitude
Word-Bank
Word-Bank is a subscription based, bolt-on website tool which explains the meanings of difficult words. It encourages meaningful understanding of website information, allowing organisations to exceed current accessibility legislation.
Word-Bank’s advantages for site users:
- Site user does not require any training or specialist software to use the product.
- Provides instant definitions with no need to follow alphabetical lists of words as in dictionaries (which many people with learning difficulties find difficult).
- It will not interfere with other accessibility tools including software for people with visual impairments.
Word-Bank’s advantages for subscribing organisations:
- Have accessibility sewn into the foundations.
- No specialist knowledge required to implement it on their sites.
- Collaborative tool, subscribers can submit their difficult words for defining.
- Has mainstream application and appeal as it is not a disability specific tool – ensuring reach across the widest possible audience.
Enabled London has ensured that our website is accessible to people with learning disabilities. Through Word-Bank, we are assured that the information that we provide on our website is accessible to a much wider audience. We are certainly proud of the end product and had very positive responses from our end users. Enabled London has ensured that the web-development were done in true partnership with us and people with learning disabilities. Many thanks!
Stephan Brusch, Head of LD Development and Prevent Coordinator at NHS LondonAs a self advocate stated: Word-Bank is good because it helps people to
understand medical words so that they can stay safe. It also helps to explain in simple language and pictures what the NHS does.
