What is here
The London Transport Museum is closing from the 21.8.05 till 01.02.07 to change the exhibits and improve their building.
We enjoyed our visit and thought it was a great place to visit!
Here you can learn about the history of London's transport.
There are lots of displays like early horse-pulled coaches and the world's first underground railway. You can climb on the vehicles and sit in the driving seats.
Actors tell you about the last 200 years of London transport using the displays.
(The actors work till 3.00 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and till 4.00 pm on Saturday and Sunday.)
There are tours for people with disabilities - you need to book a week before you go.
There are videos and touch-screen displays - these are also in different languages.
You could also visit the Learning Centre, shop or café.
There is a special Kidzone.
The museum sometimes has activities and events like art exhibitions, poetry readings or workshops.
The museum can be hired out for evenings - it holds about 400 guests.

Getting in:
If you are an adult it costs £5.95.
If you have a disability £2.50.
A helper or supporter can go in free!
If you are a student it costs £4.50.
Groups of ten or more pay cheaper prices if you book in advance.
It is free to go if you are under 16 years old and there is an adult with you.
Food:
A cup of tea and sandwich in the Nero cafe costs about £3.50.

Access from outside
Covent Garden is cobbled.

Getting around inside
The entrance door is very wide (about 1400 mm wide).
There are ramps inside the Transport museum for access around and up to the exhibits.
The ramps are not marked - we thought the colour contrast was not very good.
There is a roomy lift which can take you to all the floors.
There are 3 floors.
On Floor 1 there is the reception, free cloakroom, main exhibit space, theatre, shop, accessible toilets and baby change
There is also a Nero café. This is open all day.
There are chairs and tables inside and outside the café - they are not fixed to the floor.
The shop sells books, gifts, posters and postcards.
On floor 2 there is a picture gallery. You can also watch a historical movie.
On floor 3 there is the learning and information centre and a picture gallery.
The Learning centre has lots of books and journals and the Museum's website.
You can also watch London Transport films or listen to historical recordings.
In the picture gallery you can see movies about the future of travel and more exhibits.

Accessible toilets
There is an accessible unisex toilet on the ground floor.
The doorway is about 935 mm wide.
It is not locked. It has hand rails.
There is also a baby change room on the ground floor.

Support and equipment
The staff were all very helpful and told us lots about the Transport museum.
The tours for visually impaired visitors and disability groups are free.
They can arrange workshops and tours for people with learning disabilities.
They also organise Touch Tours for visually impaired or blind people - these are about an hour long. You need to book tours a week before visiting.
They have a guided audio loop tour for up to 15 people with hearing impairment.
Currently there is a member of staff who can sign.

The Transport museum has 1 wheelchair which visitors can use. But it is not possible to reserve it.
There are bench seats to sit on inside the museum.
Registered assistance dogs are welcome.
